The issue of professional competencies has been examined actively and debated across the profession since 2009. When the profession started discussing first professional doctorate (FPD) standards and revised master’s standards, it became clear that more investigation and consensus building were required to formalize and approve the FPD standards. Therefore, the AAAOM collaborated with subject-matter experts from national and state organizations to conduct a detailed evaluation and cross-study of how accreditation is handled in other doctoring professions. Our intent was to establish similar clear and exacting professional standards that exist in other allied healthcare professions. More information about the purpose, intent, and formation process is included in the Competency-Based Education in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.pdf
Currently the Acupuncture Science and Research Committee is working on an updated model for 2017-18.
